The women of television are a diverse bunch. They have the unique advantage of never being caught with a hair out of place or a repeat outfit…one of the benefits of not actually existing I suppose. A person’s wardrobe can say a lot about who they are, whether they intend it to or not, and nobody’s clothes are more carefully out than the characters in our movies and television shows.
I recently battled through an intense addiction to Netflix’s House of Cards, which I cured by watching the entire first season in six days. My favorite character quickly became Claire Underwood, the ruthless wife of an even more ruthless Congressman (she is pictured third from the left in the picture above).
Not only is she now one of my favorite television characters, Claire Underwood (played by Robin Wright) soon earned herself a place among my favorite style icons as well. The master of the subtly sexy corporate look, Claire traipses in and out of Season One episodes wearing a parade of beautiful dresses.
Always classy and always poised, she opts for a simple pixie cut and minimal jewelry and her go-to pair of Louboutins. Her designer pieces are worn with poise and without flash and her tasteful jewelry choices make it clear that she has money but that she’s not flashy with it.
While her color palette is primarily muted greys, blues, whites and blacks, her impeccably tailored dresses with key accessories keep her outfits from being boring. She keeps her dresses at a proper length and never shows more skin than she should. How she makes it through her entire day in stilettos is still a mystery to me but maybe they’ll make it all clear in Season Two…
She is obviously the type of woman that has her shit together at all times. Claire Underwood, please let me be you when I grow up.
